Hargrave Military Academy Welcomes Mr. Derek J. Biggs as the new CIS History Teacher

Mr. Derek J. Biggs is a passionate educator who has spent nineteen years developing student-athletes to maximize their potential on and off the football field. He is a 1991 graduate from North Carolina A&T State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He obtained his teaching credentials at North Carolina Central University in 2013 after assistant teaching in 3rd-5th grade Exceptional Children-Autistic classrooms for seven years. In the past two years he taught Social Studies to inner-city 10th grade students at Hillside High School, where he created a positive educational climate for students to learn. In his duties as an instructor, he has helped students understand the geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors that influence the development of world regions.

Coach Biggs began his coaching career at Lowes Grove Middle School in 1998 and went on to coach at two other high schools in Durham, North Carolina. Coach Biggs has been an integral part of several coaching staffs, serving as the Defensive Coordinator and Offensive Line and Defensive Back coach. He helped build Hillside High school into a perennial 4A state power and was the Co-Defensive Coordinator of the 2010 (undefeated), 4A North Carolina State Championship team. During his tenure as an assistant coach, he helped over fifty players advance to Division 1 schools. Coach Biggs was the position coach for four players that were selected to the Shrine Bowl All-Star Game and three that participated in the NCAA Championship finals.

Prior to his years coaching and teaching, Coach Biggs held positions in automotive and insurance sales, as well as management positions at FedEx Ground courier. Almost two decades of coaching experience, coupled with sales, service, and management expertise have provided him with excellent interpersonal skills to cultivate great- working relationships. Coach Biggs brings with him to Hargrave Military Academy an extensive network of middle and high school students, college players, and other football coaches, on both the high school and collegiate levels. He exemplifies a life of high character and is an example of a productive citizen for his students and players.

Coach Biggs is originally from Washington, D.C. but currently resides in Durham, North Carolina, where he has lived since 1992. He is engaged to be married in 2018. We are very fortunate to have Captain Biggs at Hargrave.
