Electives
There
are four summer school electives offered at Hargrave.
They are Driver Education, SAT Prep/College Exploration,
Computer Applications and Leadership and Ethics.
Driver Education
This course will provide the necessary classroom and
on-road instruction to qualify a student for a Virginia
license or a license in another state. Students will
complete 36 hours of classroom instruction, seven
hours of actual driving, and seven hours of observation
in the automobile. Students must be 15 1/2 years old
by the beginning of Summer School (June 30) and be
eligible for a driver's permit. Enrollment in Driver's
Education is limit-based. Copies of current grades
and a school recommendation assists in selecting course
participants. This course has an additional cost of
$150.
SAT
Prep/College Exploration
This course is designed to assist
students in preparing for college entrance examinations
and in exploring and understanding college options
available to them. The course focuses on academic
preparation for testing and understanding of the philosophy
for test-taking strategies. Academic work includes
refresher mathematics in arithmetic, Algebra I, geometry,
and the development of verbal test-taking skills.
Supplementing classroom instruction are sophisticated
computer programs for self-paced drill (Boxer math
series and PassKey). Trial testing is done using the
Stanford Testing System. College counselors will work
with students exploring college requirements and in
developing a student's awareness of college admissions
requirements and scholarship availability.
Computer
Applications
This course provides the opportunity
to become proficient on the computer while gaining
accuracy and speed on the keyboard. Students gain
an introduction to operating systems, computer terms
and network environments. The curriculum focuses on
the Microsoft Office applications. All courses are
designed to enable a student to interact in a networking
environment and the Internet. Students will be placed
in one of two courses based on testing (following
their arrival). Basic courses concentrate on typing
skills, word processing, and proficiency with operating
systems. Advanced applications focus on Windows skills
and Microsoft PowerPoint applications.
Leadership
andEthics
At the core,
Hargrave is leadership. Hargrave Military Academy,
under the direction of Dr. Wheeler L. Baker, Col.,
USMC (ret.), has established the General
Colin Powell Center for Leadership and Ethics.
The primary purpose of the center is to build on Hargrave's
already well established educational leadership capabilities
and place additional focus on these important character
building traits.
In addition to offering a credit
course within the high school curriculum, the General
Colin Powell Center for Leadership and Ethics will
involve the faculty and staff through their commitment
to integrity, values, and spiritual growth. The objectives
of the program will build on Hargrave's leadership
model, emphasizing the value of adopting an ethical
behavior, accepting responsibility, developing strong
character, and practicing the principles of leadership.
This course offers a 1/2 credit toward graduation.
