Challenging, Safe and Rewarding Fun for Campers of All Ability Levels
Hargrave
students enjoy a wide range of afternoon activities
for personal growth, development and fun. (Choices
include Hargrave’s popular Adventure camp
or one of eight athletic sports camps. All students are
required to participate in at least Adventure
OR one sports camp.)
Considered
one of the finest skills based technical adventure
programs on the east coast, Hargrave’s Adventure program has a reputation of safety, quality
and intensity. Activities include canoeing Virginia’s
scenic waterways, white water rafting on West Virginia’s
rapids, climbing and rappelling on Hargrave's new pratice tower,
and marksmanship, including small bore rifle and shotgun.
The locations in these states are all top rated adventure
destinations. The Adventure program does require
an additional fee.
For this
level of activity, safety is key. Hargrave employs
only the best instructors with experienced adventure
skills. Hargrave teaches a full range of fundamental
skills, including: canoeing technique, climbing technique,
rappelling, belaying and marksmanship. These important
skills are taught on campus before applying that knowledge
off campus.
Summer School's WHAT TO BRING LIST
Boy Scouts
Contact: CPT Ryan Meyer von Bremen, Hargrave Scoutmaster, at 434-441-6719..
During the summer session at Hargrave, members of the Boy Scouts have the opportunity to earn merit badges which may be awarded through Hargrave’s own Troop 68 or credited through a scout’s home troop.
Scouts enrolled in Hargrave’s Adventure Program may earn the Climbing, Whitewater, Canoeing, and Rifle Shooting merit badges. The Shotgun Shooting merit badge is another possibility that can be arranged through the school’s Scoutmaster.
Depending on a scout’s enrollment, classes also offer the possibility of earning merit in Chemistry, Art, Graphic Design, sculpture, photography, reading and music.
Other awards such as the BSA Mile Swim and BSA Translator Strips (for advanced foreign language students) in Spanish and French may be arranged through the school’s Scoutmaster.
Additionally, Hargrave’s troop has counselors on campus for over eighty other BSA merit badges for which it may be possible to arrange a time with the school’s Scoutmaster during the session to arrange to work.
