College Enrichment Experience
The College Enrichment Experience is a course that can be characterized as an information workshop that will include counselor and teacher responsibilities, student responsibilities and parent involvement. This course is geared to peaking the interest of the student’s sense of awareness, honing decision-making skills and providing focus to their individual goal-setting skills as they relate to college selection. The course highlights the value of good research, problem-solving skills, critical-thinking and how evaluation tools are applied to the college admission process.
Another aspect of the course teaches students how to help themselves through organizational skills, study skills and some test-taking strategies. The course also reviews the difference between high school graduation requirements and college entrance requirements. The course will review the value of taking Honors courses, strong grade point averages, SAT/ACT scores, personal statements/essays, teacher recommendations and extracurricular activities to include jobs, community and volunteer services for college preparation.
The goal is to arm the student with as much current information as possible to make the best decision possible concerning his future.
How
to Study
The root of Hargrave’s academic
success is found in our ‘How to Study’
program. This program is presented in conjunction
with the classes and study hall to ensure that students
get the most out of their academic experience. ‘How
to Study’ teaches the SQ3R method, time management,
organization, planning, note and test taking skills.
The concepts taught in How to Study is reinforced within the classroom daily. This is a non-credit course.
Study
Hall
A mandatory, supervised study
hall is held each pre-class evening from 7:30–
9:00 p.m. Study Hall provides each student a dedicated
time to complete academic coursework. This is a non-credit
course.
