Summer Social Studies Course Offerings

American Civil War in Virginia: A Study in Leadership and Character
(New; 1 Credit; 2 academic blocks; Additional Fee for travel expenses)

2012 Summer Enrichment SeriesThe goal of this elective course is to provide a rigorous experiential learning opportunity for upper school students who desire pursuit of an in-depth study of the Civil War. The course emphasizes character traits exemplified by well-known military and civilian leaders, and culminates in a multi-day camping trip to various Civil War sites throughout Virginia.

U.S. History
(Repeat; 1 Credit)

United States History is a course which presents a general background into the development of the United States from the pre-Colonial era into the 21st century. A student examines the institutions, events, significant activities of the major historical occurrences and figures. The student views United States History in order to gain a perspective on the manner in which our country developed into present day American society.
 
World History/Studies
(Repeat; 1 Credit)

The focus of this course is the study of the history and geography of the world's people and places. Special attention will be paid to the history and influence of Western Europe from the Middle Ages to the present. The course will also emphasize the environments and histories of Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.  Significant attention will be given to the ways in which the Age of Discovery, and Scientific and Technological Revolutions created new economic conditions that in turn produced social and political changes. Using texts, maps, globes, graphs, pictures, stories, diagrams, charts and a variety of geographic and historical inquiry/research and technological skills, students will make geographical and historical analysis of the world's regions.
