Summer Science (Grades 9-12)

Good science takes the proper application of the Scientific Method and discipline, which makes a great subject to instruct at a military boarding school. Hargrave has a long and successful history of science instruction. Often the smart students take their Hargrave science notes with them to college.

Summer Science Course Offerings

Chemistry
(New; 1 Credit)

2012 Summer Enrichment SeriesGeneral Chemistry is offered as an elective for the eleventh and twelfth grade levels for those students who want an additional laboratory credit beyond biology but who may not have sufficient math background or interest for CP Chemistry. The course covers the general areas of classification and measurement of matter, properties of aqueous solutions, chemical equations and reaction enthalpies.

The course emphasizes an "hands-on" experience by the student through a variety of laboratory related investigations. Chemical concepts are explored in the context of the environment, the home, the human body and in industrial applications.

Biology
(Repeat; 1 Credit)

Biology is widely defined as the science of life and living organisms. Biology encompasses innumerable forms and phenomena of nature, including their structure, function, growth, origin and distribution. From the smallest microbes and bacteria studied by microbiologists to the massive emigration patterns of migratory birds studied by ecologists, biology is in everything around us.

General Biology is a survey course offering a broad introduction to all the specific fields of study biology has to offer. A combination of book-work and bench-work will allow for the basic understanding of the wide options the subject has to offer for future study by the students in this course.
