The study of foreign languages is a big aspect of Hargrave’s Humanities department. During the summer, Spanish is a popular language for those needing a little more time to perfect their language skills.
Summer Languages Course Offerings
Modern Standard Arabic
(New; 1/2 Credit; 1 academic block)
This course introduces students to both written and spoken Modern Standard Arabic. Emphasis will be on learning the Letters of the Arabic alphabet, and on how to utilize them in both reading and writing the language. Students will learn basic conversational skills including introducing and speaking about oneself and should be able to carry on a brief conversation by the course's conclusion. This course will also include an introduction to the culture, history, geography and current state of affairs in the Middle East.
Spanish 1
(Repeat; 1 Credit)
This course allows students to have sufficient practice in the comprehension of key vocabulary through listening activities. Students will communicate in the target language daily using previously learned material. Students will be able to discuss and understand events in the present tense; develop comprehension of essential information in written material; and write sentences, paragraphs and short stories using memorized material including personal and factual information. Emphasis will be placed on the development of reasonable accuracy in using writing conventions, grammatical elements and vocabulary. Students will learn about the countries where the target language is spoken and their major ancient civilizations.
Spanish 2
(Repeat; 1 Credit)
Students will review all objectives from Spanish 1 and will be able to build on previous vocabulary and grammar skills. They will continue to learn more vocabulary, and focus on grammar development. Spanish students will be able to discuss and understand events in the past, present and future utilizing proper grammar by paying special attention to the imperfect, preterit and the future tense. Students will also understand and use the subjunctive mood to give commands, express wants, emotions and doubts. Students will increase their ability to use more complicated sentence structures with expanded usage of direct and indirect objects and pronouns. Students are expected to converse in Spanish during the class time. Students will be exposed to Spanish literature and culture through various readings, films and literary excerpts.
