Hargrave’s Language Arts courses are robust in their preparation for higher high school coursework and in college preparation. The department is often noted for sharpening thinking skills as well as reading, writing and grammar.
Summer Language Arts Course Offerings
English 9
(Repeat; 1 Credit)
This ninth grade course is intended for a student whose past performance indicates a need for reinforcement in essential skills. Literature is incorporated by the study of a novel, biography or play. The student will study grammar, vocabulary and effective writing. Knowledge of literary terms and forms will be applied in the students’ own writings and in the analysis of literature.
English 10
(Repeat; 1 Credit)
This course consists of four parts: literature, grammar, composition and vocabulary. Literature is emphasized, using selections from a literary anthology, photocopied works and a novel. The literary selections cover a wide range of genres. They will be organized according to key literary elements, such as plot, character, setting, point of view, symbol, irony and theme. Compositions will include smaller journal writing assignments, as well as formal essays. Grammar will involve a review of basic concepts and the building of new skills with an emphasis on their use in day-to-day and formal writing. New vocabulary will be studied and assessed weekly.
English 11
(Repeat; 1 Credit)

Creative Writing
(Elective; 1/2 Credit)
This course consists of learning how to creatively express your thoughts and ideas through fiction and non-fiction writing exercises. Major writing assignment will include a short story, several poems, a film review, an in-person interview, and a technical writing piece. Assignments will also include smaller journal writing assignments. Grammar will also be studied. It will involve a review of basic concepts and the building of new skills with an emphasis on their use in day-to-day and formal writing.
ESL: English as a Second Language
(1 Credit)
All levels (I-III) of ESL are offered during the intensive four-week program. Students will be strongly encouraged but not required to return to Hargrave in the fall. The academic program will consist of two morning classes in which participants will study their particular level of ESL. Two days a week the students will eat lunch at school and return to the classroom for Conversation and American Culture classes. Three days a week all international students will be taken off campus for lunch and an afternoon of cultural activities designed to help them learn more about American culture and give them practical experience in using the English language.
