The very
essence of Hargrave is rooted in our Christian faith.
Since 1909 when Reverend T.R. Sanford joined together
with Mr. Jesse Hargrave and his son J. Hunt Hargrave,
Hargrave Military Academy has maintained a strong
commitment to Christian values and beliefs. In 1913,
the Baptist General Association of Virginia presented
its first gift to the Academy and has maintained its
affiliation continuously ever since.
Spiritual
Goals
Hargrave
aims to instill four goals in each Cadet:
To provide a Christian environment
that permeates every aspect of the Academy, including
academic, military, athletic and extra-curricular
activities.
To emphasize total development of each student: mentally,
physically, socially and spiritually.
To proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and His love
for each student, faculty and staff member.
To provide the opportunity for the Cadets to develop
their own personal Christian growth and discipleship
through worship, Bible study and Christian fellowship.
Christian
Worship, Bible Study and Fellowship
Worship
is a focal point in the life of the Academy. Attendance
in chapel is required three times each week: Sunday
morning, Tuesday morning prior to class and Thursday
evening or Vespers. These services consist of hymn
signing and a message by the Chaplain or by an invited
guest. Cadet participation is the primary emphasis,
with Cadets singing, reading scripture and leading
in prayer.
Cadets may
also serve on the Chapel staff to
assist the Chaplain in support of the religious program.
Members of the Chapel staff are identified by a silver cross
worn on their uniform.
Involvement
in a local church is encouraged,
but not required. Within a few minutes walk of the
campus are several denominational churches where opportunities
for Christian fellowship and worship are available.
The Fellowship
of Christian Athletes meets Monday evenings
and provides a weekly time of sharing, Bible study
and the study of the lives and testimonies of Christian
college and professional athletes.
Various
faculty member sponsor Small Groups
of Cadets on a regular basis for encouragement, fellowship
and discipleship. Small groups provide closer contact
with each member and allows for questions.
Spiritual
Events
Hargrave
maintains two special religious traditions every year.
The first is ‘Hanging of the Greens.’
Hanging of the Greens is held each year prior to Christmas
Break, and has become one of Hargrave’s most
uplifting traditions. In addition to Cadets, Hargrave
employees and members of the community meet in the
Hargrave chapel for this wonderful event.
Spiritual Emphasis Week
occurs each spring. The week features a religious
service each day. Some years include a theme for the
week, while other years include a theme for the day.
Various speakers, singers and religious performers
are often on campus at this time. It is a time of
renewal for those who have already accepted Christ
as Savior, and a time or real challenge for those
who have not yet committed their lives to Him.
