Lunch’n Learn with Congressman Robert Hurt, Virginia’s 5th District

Press Release for January 10, 2012

Lunch'n Learn with Robert HurtCongressman Robert Hurt of Virginia’s 5th District was the speaker for Hargrave Military Academy’s January 10, 2012 Lunch’n Learn event. Hurt is a freshmen Congressman, defeating Tom Perriello in the 2010 election. It was a highly contested election that was considered to be one of the most watched races in the country for the election cycle. Combined, both men spent over six million dollars during the contest, a record for Virginia’s 5th Distirct.

Hurt pointed out that Virginia’s 5th District has more land area that the state of New Jersey and has over 700,000 citizens. He indicated that it is a large area of responsibility both in terms of size and population.

“To be sworn in as a member of Congress was a great honor,” said Hurt.

In addition to his Congressional office, Hurt and his staff work out of three offices in the district. They work very hard to be responsive to the people they serve in the district, and take seriously the voice of the people that they represent. Even… if they disagree with them. This includes, as Hurt mentioned, the people that didn’t vote for him or those that just didn’t vote.

The Cadets took the opportunity to ask questions on topics, including Congressman Hurt’s thoughts on balancing the Federal budget, unemployment, the EPA and immigration. There was even a pointed question on the new Internet regulations.

“Be involved,” urged Congressman Hurt. “It is not your right to be involved, it is your duty.

“The decisions that are made by the U.S. Congress this year and in the next few years will chart the course for the future of our country.”

Hargrave’s Lunch’n Learn program is run by Mrs. Amy Walker, Hargrave’s Director of Admissions. The purpose is to introduce Cadets to potential careers and career paths by professionals that have taken those opportunities. Guest speakers are invited every week for an informal lunch session, were the young men can eat and listen while the speaker talks.
