Oditt Claims Lankford Fellowship; E.A. Floyd Award at Hargrave

Hargrave Military Academy recognized Jennifer Oditt of Chatham with two prestigious end of year awards, the Lankford Fellowship and the Edward Allen Floyd Award.

Hargrave Military Academy recognized Mrs. Jennifer Oditt of Chatham with two prestigious end of year awards, the Lankford Fellowship and the Edward Allen (E.A.) Floyd Award. Both awards are presented at the end of the school year to teachers that qualify for their requirements. The E.A. Floyd Award was presented to the entire Corps of Cadets, faculty and staff during Hargrave’s underclassmen award ceremony, Tuesday, May 11, 2010. The Lankford Fellowship was awarded during Hargrave’s 2010 Graduation on Sunday, May 16, 2010

“It is not every year that one of our instructors claims both awards,” said Dr. Wheeler Baker, Col. USMC (ret.). “Jennifer is a devoted teacher, a knowledgeable instructor and a tremendous asset to Hargrave. Her work in both English and Latin instruction is impressive. She richly deserves both.”

The Lankford Fellowship was established in 1987 by Hargrave’s Board of Trustees in honor of Veron T. Lankford, Sr. for his 39 year association with Hargrave as a Cadet, instructor, Dean and president; and to honor his wife, Margaret Holland Lankford, for her 38 years as instructor and partner to the President of the Academy.

The Fellowship is award to a Hargrave faculty member interested in summer studies that not only broaden their personal education, but will contribute directly to enhancing education at Hargrave. The Fellowship directly funds the winning proposal, which ranges from $2-4,000 per year.

Oditt’s proposal, “Linking the Past and the Future: Utilizing Technology in Latin Class,” won the Fellowship after a peer review from previous award winners. Several proposals are typically submitted each year.

Oditt will attend the American Classical League Conference at Wake Forrest University this summer, search for ways to incorporate technology into Hargrave’s Latin program and visit other universities in the area to learn best practices for integrating technology in learning.

“Since we are continually looking for ways to appeal to a new generation of technologically savvy students,” says Oditt. “Anything that can be implemented in this arena will not only benefit the Latin student, but can be shared and utilized by the faculty as a whole in working with all of our students.”

The E.A. Floyd Award is presented each year to the instructor who best exemplifies and teaches the spirit and character the Academy instills into its students. This is a cash award which is voted on by Hargrave’s faculty and key staff. Floyd was a long serving mentor, instructor and leader at Hargrave.
