Work Hard, Play Hard
Hargrave maintains a very active and involved student activities department. A mixture of activities is planned for closed and incentive weekends both on and off campus. Cadets are free to join these supported activities, and get off campus and enjoy the many opportunities available in North Carolina, Virginia and even West Virginia.
Not every activity is for every Cadet, so a mixture of opportunities is presented to the Cadet Corps often. Hiking, white water rafting, climbing, rappelling, snow skiing and other outdoor fun are hallmarks of the department. On campus, Hargrave hosts a 50 meter indoor pool, tennis courts, a Marine rated obstacle course, a Marine rated climbing tower, a leadership course and a paint ball course.
Attending professional and minor league sporting events are popular trips for Hargrave Cadets. Sports include football, basketball, baseball, hockey and NASCAR. Teams typically include the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Bobcats, the Baltimore Orioles and the Carolina Hurricanes. Catching a Virginia Tech, UVA, NC State or UNC college game is available. College games are often well attended.
There are also trips to several points of interest, including Lynchburg’s Snowflex Center, historical sites, shopping and amusement centers/parks. Etiquette classes are also offered.
Coach Bill Eberly
Director of Student Activities
Energetic and infectiously positive, Coach Bill Eberly brings a range of professional and personal experience to Hargrave’s campus. This is important in an Academy where Cadets are expected to work hard both in the classrooms and on the athletic fields. During their free time, these same Cadets like to play hard and relax ‘big.’
Coach Eberly holds a BA in Biblical Studies with a minor in Physical Education from Evangel University. He is certified to teach Health, Physical Education and Bible. He is well trained in outdoor adventure activities and practices ‘safety first’ with Cadets to minimize injury while still providing a challenge. Activities include rock climbing, rappelling, high ropes course, canoe, white water rafting, kayaking, zip lines, mountain bikes, archery and scuba. Eberly is scuba certified.
Arthur Murray Dance Studios also taught Eberly how to dance, including the Swing, Rumba, Cha Cha and the Waltz. He is a trained Swing instructor.
He is certified in First Aid and CPR. Experienced life guard.
He is a certified soccer and volleyball coach, and has additional experience in coaching basketball, baseball and football. He is an AAU club volleyball director.
Coach Eberly has a wide range of experience mentoring children. He has 13 years of experience as a Physical Education teacher and coach. Over the past 15 years, he has served as a Youth Pastor, YMCA group supervisor, YMCA Summer Sports Camp Director, Boys and Girls Club group supervisor, Boy Scout/Awana leader, Sunday School teacher and High Adventure coordinator.
Coach Eberly is married to Annette Eberly. They reside in Chatham and have one daughter.
