Criteria For Initial Placement and Progression
ESL students will be given the SLEP during orientation prior to initial entrance in the program, at the end of the first semester and during the first week of the new school year.
The criteria used in assessing placement and progressions within the program are:
1. SLEP test scores
2. A sample of the student’s writing
3. Teacher Recommendation
4. The student’s performance in mainstream classes-where applicable
Subject to all other criteria being satisfactorily met, ESL levels will be determined using the following SLEP performance guidelines:
ESL I- 30-39
ESL II-40-45
ESL III-46-51
INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH LITERATURE-51-57
Criteria For Placement of ESL Students in Mainstream Classes
All ESL students will be mainstreamed into math, science and social studies classes. The ESL coordinator will work with teachers in this endeavor, meeting with them on a weekly basis to elicit feedback and best assess the required ESL support. The student will be given a grade of pass/fail until that time the mainstream teacher, ESL coordinator and student determine the student is able to consistently maintain a grade of a C or better. The student will be mainstreamed into all other classes when it is determined that he is ready to do so by his ESL teachers. |
