American Red Cross Swimming Programs

Contact: Coach Larry Simonov, Aquatic Director, at 434-432-2681.

Hargrave works closely with the American Red Cross (ARC) supporting programs for both our Cadets and local community alike. A number of programs are offered, which provide numerous opportunities for both individuals and families.

Learn To Swim

Beginning in early May, and continuing through July, Hargrave conducts an ARC Learn to Swim program.

The cost is $50.00 per session. Each session consists of eight 25-minute lessons, taught Monday through Thursday for two consecutive weeks.

Our Learn to Swim classes are available both in the morning and evening.

The ARC Learn to Swim program consists of seven skill levels. Hargrave conducts classes in Levels I-V. Those that complete Level V, and want to continue learning, are encouraged to join our competitive swimming program, Hargrave Aquatics.

I. Water Exploration
Orientation to aquatic environment.

II. Primary Skills
Expand on fundamental aquatic locomotion.
Floating and kicking on front and back.
Begin rhythmic breathing.

III. Stroke Readiness
Begin combining skills to form coordinated swimming strokes.
Introduction to elementary backstroke.

IV. Stroke Development
Develop confidence and endurance in various strokes.
Introduction to breaststroke and sidestroke.

V. Stroke Refinement
Endurance and demanding stroke coordination in the freestyle, backstrokes, and breaststroke. Introduction to butterfly surface dives, and springboard diving.

If your child has never participated in ARC Learn to Swim class, or if you are unsure of your child’s level, a water test is recommended prior to enrolling. Please contact our Learn to Swim coordinator for testing.

Parent-Tot

Ages six months through three years. This program is not designed to teach children to swim or even to survive in the water on their own. This program teaches parents techniques to help orient their children to the water and to supervise water activities in a safe manner. A responsible adult must accompany the child in the water during all class sessions. Please call for Parent-Tot times and dates.

Adult Lessons

Hargrave offers adult swimming lessons by request. Please call for Adult swimming times and dates.

I. Basic Aquatic Skills
Become comfortable in chest deep water.
Introduction to fundamental aquatic locomotion.

II. Stroke Mechanics
Develop the techniques necessary to make swimming a fitness choice.
Recommended for those interested in joining the Masters program.
