Hargrave averages approximately 350 students on any
given year. This includes approximately 25 Day Students.
What is the student-teacher ratio?
Our current ratio average is 11:1.
How much does it cost per year?
The tuition, room and board for the 2009/2010 academic
year is $29,500. This does not include administrative
fees. Administrative fees are student
specific. Examples of these fees include driver training,
ESL and a Non-U.S. Resident's I-20. Unlike many military schools, Hargrave does include uniforms in the overall tuition.
What are additional fees outside of the tuition rate for boarding students?
$350 incidental fee, $200 security fee, student allowance and purchase of the NetBook computer through www.hargrave.edu. Incidental and security funds not used during the school year will be refunded at the end of the school year. The base price for the NetBook computer is $350. Accessories and warranties are additional.
What are additional fees outside of the tuition rate for day students?

Is financial aid available?
Yes.
Commencing with the 2009/2010 school year, Hargrave will be utilizing the School and Student Service for financial aid (SSS) through the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). This process can easily be started by going to www.nais.org/financialaid/sss. Once at the website you will need to fill out the Personal Financial Statement (PFS). This will enable us at Hargrave to process your request more efficiently. There is a cost for the 2009/10 school year application. The cost for completing the form online is $22 and $24 to mail. Submitting the form online will also ensure your information is accurate and it is delivered to us faster, thus enabling us to process your request quicker. What kind of student goes to Hargrave?
Hargrave attracts students of many diverse academic and cultural backgrounds. The type of student that attends Hargrave is one that wants to succeed - not only in school, but also from a moral and athletic perspective as well.
How "military" is Hargrave?
Hargrave's military program is designed to present an environment in which a Cadet may gain a sense of honor, commitment and fidelity. The daily exposure of a military environment assists Cadets in developing self-discipline, character, ethics, team building and leadership.
Is Hargrave accredited?
Hargrave Military Academy is fully accredited by the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)
and the Virginia Association of Independent Schools
(VAIS). Hargrave is a member of the National Association
of Independent Schools (NAIS) and The National Association of Boarding Schools (TABS).
When are the grading periods?
Hargrave has six six-week grading periods. Our first
term of three six-week grading periods, generally begins
Labor Day and ends mid-January. Our
second term, also of three six-week periods, ends Mid-May each year.
What percentage of seniors get accepted to
college?
Since 2003, Hargrave has maintained
a 100% college acceptance rate for all students, except those who elect to enter the military directly upon graduation.
How pervasive is the school's Christian aspect?
Hargrave respects people of all faiths and denominations.
Our Chaplain teaches biblical Christianity; it has
no denominational affiliation. Many of Hargrave's
teachers and staff members are dedicated Christians
who see their work not only as teaching, but also
as a ministry. For this reason, Cadets have daily
contact with elements of the Christian faith, not
only as taught, but as lived.
What are the athletic programs like at Hargrave?
Participation in athletics is extremely important
for the Cadets at Hargrave. Cadets must participate
in an activity of their choice. Hargrave offers over 20
sport/competitive teams, including 11 varsity sports. Sports are very
active and rewarding for most Cadets. If the Cadet
decides against participation in an organized sport,
the Cadet is required to participate in our Physical
Readiness Improvement Program, or intramurals, which
is conducted through our military department.
Are Hargrave athletic teams successful?
Yes. Hargrave teams are frequently seen as Virginia
Independent Conference (VIC) champions or contenders
in several sports. These sports have recently included
baseball, wrestling, baseball, swimming and rifle.
In addition, Hargrave has a nationally competitive Debate and Forensic Team.
What is a typical Cadet's day like?
At Hargrave, a Cadet's daily schedule keeps them employed
and engaged in activity throughout the day. The schedule
requires self-discipline on behalf of each Cadet.
An average Cadet day includes three academic courses,
three meals, three formations, athletics time, tutorials,
company time and study hall.
How often can I see my child if he attends
Hargrave?
There are ample opportunities for families to visit
Cadets. Dinner passes can be arranged during the
week and weekend leave is available about every three
weeks. There are also extended vacation periods during
Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break. (Spring
Break may or may not include Easter.)
