Leadership with Respect
Hargrave Military Academy’s General Colin Powell Center for Leadership & Ethics was established to provide our Cadets with a challenging, progressive and structured leadership education. Hargrave Cadets are taught to lead in an academic environment and through practical application by applying learned leadership techniques in day-to-day situations.
" There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, learning from failure.
General Colin Powell
Since 1909, Hargrave’s Cadets have been defined as young men and women of strong moral character, who are guided in their decisions by a strict code of moral ethics. We believe it is more important to do the right thing than just do things right.
The General Colin Powell Center for Leadership & Ethics provides Hargrave’s Cadets with a stepped approach to leadership education. Beginning with the Middle School (7th & 8th grades) leadership is taught as an exploratory subject with Character and Character Development as the main theme.
In their freshman year (9th grade), Cadets are taught good Followership Skills before assuming leadership positions within the Corps of Cadets.
" If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more and become more, you are a leader.
John Quincy Adams
During their sophomore year, Cadets are offered the opportunity to enroll in a formal Leadership and Ethics Class (a ½ credit class of 18 weeks in length). The curriculum includes an investigation of the foundations of leadership such as Leadership Traits, Leadership Principles, Leadership Styles and Ethical Behavior. It is also during their sophomore year that Cadets begin to assume positions as small unit leaders (squad leaders) which permits practical application of the leadership principles learned in the classroom.
During their junior year, the Cadets are given the opportunity to attend the Non-Commissioned Officer’s School and, as seniors, attend Officer Candidate School to prepare them for roles of greater responsibility within the Corps of Cadets.
Hargrave Military Academy and the General Colin Powell Center for Leadership & Ethics are committed to developing our Cadets into leaders that:
- Want to make a difference.
- Are not afraid to promote change.
- Will build a sense of community.
- Will take action when required.
- Have the ability to communicate a vision.
- Understand and seek responsibility.
- Make sound ethical decisions.
Hargrave Cadets who complete all the requirements of the Colin Powell Leadership Program will earn the Colin Powell Leadership Medal, and a Certificate in Leadership Studies to supplement their Hargrave Military Academy Diploma.
