Total Student Interaction with Course Material

Hargrave’s Center for Integrated Studies (CIS) presents a dynamic classroom experience for Cadets in grades 7, 8 and 9. The Academy’s CIS instructors join their students in the learning process, building academic aptitude, self-confidence in subject material and, most importantly, instilling a love for learning through the thematic approach of the Integrated Studies curriculum.

The CIS curriculum is unified (crossing traditional discipline-based course-boundaries) by use of a rotating annual theme that reflects both a deliberate pedagogical vision and current events on the world stage.  Rather than "compartmentalizing" classroom subjects, course material, projects, and student efforts are deliberately designed to mutually reinforce each other.  Each year's theme is subsequently broken down into sub-themes that dovetail with Hargrave's 6- and 18-week grading cycles.  While addressing the foundational academic requirements for college-bound students, the curriculum trains students to effectively work in teams, exposes students to a college-like schedule (3 courses/day, courses meet on alternating days), balances traditional teaching methods with hands-on applications, and incorporates the advanced educational technology that appeals to today’s student.

Students are placed in a "Core" or cohort based on demonstrated abilities.  Students within the same core will remain together through classes in Language Arts, Cultural Studies, and Science.  In some cases, the material taught to a Core does not correspond to the traditional definition of a particular grade.  i.e., a student traditionally placed into the 7th grade may be placed into a Core with other students that may traditionally have been placed in the 8th or 9th grades.  Language Arts, Cultural Studies, and Science are called "Core Courses," and required of all CIS students.  Required Math instruction is individualized and includes options up through Honors Geometry.  Elective courses are available in foreign languages, art, music, and character development (Colin Powell Center).  9th grade students earn credits towards graduation.
